Berkeley Pit in Butte + My Favorites
The Berkeley Pit Viewing Stand allows visitors a view of the former Berkely Pit, a huge truck-operated, open-pit copper mine that operated between 1955 and 1982. The pit is 7,000 ft (2,133 m) long and extends to a depth of more than 1800 ft (548 m). The pit is now considered to be one of the biggest clean up sites in the United States and millions of gallons of water flow into the pit each day. Admission is free. Address: Continental Drive | Butte, MT | 59701 Tel: 1 406 723-3177
Butte-Silver Bow County Courthouse + My Favorites
The County Courthouse was built in the early 1900s and exemplifies the ornate and elegant Beaux Arts style that was popular at the time. Costing an enormous amount of $482,000 to build, the Courthouse features pilasters and tall columns that echo the grandeur of ancient Greece and Rome, and a uniformity of materials, design and height for the cornice line. The Courthouse is open for self-guided tours weekdays between nine and five. Address: 155 W. Granite Street | Butte, MT | 59701 Tel: 1 406 497-6200
